Caribbean Holiday
A short suite of three pieces for trombone quartet in three well-known Latin styles. The pieces can be performed separately or together. The suite begins with the relaxed ‘Bossa Beach’ where trombones two and three share the tune as gentle waves of harmony roll onto the beach. Next, ‘Moonlight Mambo’ features trombone one in a romantic ballad supported by the swaying rhythms of the accompanying parts. Finally in ‘Calypso Cocktail’ each part in turn gets to step forward into the limelight in a spirited finale.
Parts 1 and 4 are a little more demanding than 2 and 3, but the whole suite is very accessible for easy intermediate level players.

Modal suite for saxophone quartet
The three pieces in this suite for saxophone quartet, Antemelydian, Phrygy waltz and Locrian Step each explore a different mode, their exotic scales creating a haunting atmosphere of other times and other places. The three movements can be performed separately or together. Reluctant improvisers will be reassured to know that if they stay on the appropriate modal scale they will never play a ‘wrong’ note!
Antemelydian is a spiky syncopated march. The lead is shared between the top three parts before short sections that are open for improvisation in the Lydian flat 7th mode by all four players in turn.
Phrygy waltz is a gentle 3/4 swing ballad where the soprano can shine with a flowing melody. The tenor then steps forward to solo on the Phrygian scale.
Locrian Step is the lively conclusion to the suite in a rhythmic rhumba mood with harmonies inspired by the Locrian mode. There are solo sections for tenor and soprano.

Drive my car
This arrangement for soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones gives the Beatles’ classic roadster a jazzy new paint job. While the three upper parts share a swing version of the well-known tune, the baritone steals the limelight with a funky intro, walking bass and written solo. A great opportunity to surprise and delight your audience with music they’ve heard a hundred times, but never like this!
